Confidence Builders for Those With a Disability

When you have a disability, whether you were born with it or acquired it later in life, it does not have to define who you are as a person. Everyone, regardless of abilities, has the right to be happy, to work, to have fun, to socialize, and to try to achieve their dreams.

Sometimes it becomes hard to be positive. Sometimes it feels as if your disability is holding you back or preventing you from enjoying life. Sometimes you feel defeated. This is normal for everyone. However, there are some things that you should keep in mind.

Live Up to Your Own Expectations

You know yourself better than anyone. Regardless of what doctors tell you or what your friends and family think, only you know what you can and cannot achieve. Do not let others' expectations, or lack thereof, hold you back from doing what you want to do and trying new things.

Never Compare Yourself to Others

Never compare yourself to someone else. It does not matter if they have a disability, the same disability, or none at all. Everyone is an individual and should be treated as such. You must remember to treat yourself as the individual you are so that you can achieve your dreams.

Be Understanding of Others

Many people feel as if they must treat a person differently when they have a disability. It may be their way of trying to be kind, but in reality, it probably feels offensive. Be the person who can overlook these inadequacies and just brush off their "good intentions." If their treatment is really bothersome, simply tell the person that they can be open and honest with you because it builds a much better friendship.

Keep an Open Mind

Yes, your disability can cause challenges in your everyday life. Yes, your disability may prevent you from doing some activities. However, your disability does not have to prevent you from trying new things. Keep an open mind to new experiences. You will love how much this will enhance your life.

Remain Positive

The best thing that you can do is remain positive, even when you do not feel that way. It can be difficult to feel positive, especially if you are feeling insecure or defeated at the time. But being positive can start with something very small, and the happiness that being positive brings will only grow from there.
